Spousal sponsorship allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to live permanently in Canada.

1. Who Can Be Sponsored?

Spouse – Legally married to the sponsor.
Common-law Partner – Lived together for at least 12 months in a marriage-like relationship.
Conjugal Partner – In a committed relationship for at least 1 year but unable to live together due to reasons like immigration barriers or legal restrictions.

Both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships are eligible.


2. Who Can Sponsor?

To be eligible, the sponsor must:
✔ Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
✔ Be at least 18 years old.
✔ Not have been sponsored as a spouse in the last 5 years.
✔ Not be receiving social assistance (except for disability reasons).
✔ Agree to financially support the spouse for 3 years.


3. Types of Spousal Sponsorship Applications

📌 Inland Sponsorship

  • If the spouse is already in Canada on a temporary visa.

  • Allows the spouse to apply for an Open Work Permit while waiting for PR.

📌 Outland Sponsorship

  • If the spouse is living outside Canada.

  • Application is processed through the visa office in their home country.


4. Processing Time

12 to 24 months, depending on the applicant’s country and the completeness of the application.

📄 Proof of Relationship:

  • Marriage certificate (for spouses).

  • Joint bank accounts, utility bills, or lease agreements (for common-law partners).

  • Photos, messages, and travel records showing a genuine relationship.

📄 Medical Exam & Police Clearance:

  • The sponsored spouse must undergo a medical exam.

  • Police clearance from any country they lived in for more than 6 months since age 18.

📄 Financial Commitment:

  • The sponsor must sign an agreement to support their spouse for 3 years.
